For the study tour of March 18, 2023, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 19 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to learn about the geological and ecological environment of Shitoushan, and discover the ocean culture of Keelung. It was clear and sunny on the day of the tour, and the interns and their parents were on time for the departure. At the start of the day's activities, team leader Ms. Lu Ming-yun reminded everyone about things to note and what to observe, and gave the interns some background knowledge.

In the morning, everyone set off for Shitoushan Park in Cape Jingshan, New Taipei City. Its special geographical location provides an outlook of the Jinshan Wanli coastline. Formerly a military control area, it is largely spared from human destruction, allowing it to retain historical relics, such as old barracks, bunkers and cannon emplacement, and diverse ecological resources. Led by the tour guide, interns walked along a coastal trail as they learned about forest ecosystems and coastal plants, including herbs, shrubs and trees. They also learned about the restoration of local Taiwan lilies and golden spider lilies in recent years, and their spectacular blooms in summer and autumn. At the end of the trail, everyone saw the famous Jinshan landmark – Twin Candlestick Islets, which are rocks formed by coastal erosion. The tour guide also told the legend of the “husband-and-wife rocks” behind the Twin Candlestick Islets, which makes everyone appreciate that it is not just a beauty of nature but also a part of human culture. The two-hour tour gave interns a spectacular ocean view and experience of the wonders of nature.

In the afternoon, everyone visited the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology in Keelung to learn about corals. During the “Satoumi Classroom – Coral Exploration” class, the tour guide explained the significance of coral ecosystem using a fun and engaging approach. Corals are formed by coral polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate in the right environment to build coral reefs. Coral reefs are the habitats of many marine creatures, and coral share a symbiotic relationship with single-celled algae. By playing roles representing different functions of the coral reef in the play “Coral Catchers”, which depicted the process and impact of coral bleaching, interns developed a deeper understanding of marine conservation and personally experienced the threat of coral bleaching to marine organisms. Next, the interns proceeded to Chaojing workstation at the iOCEAN Marine Center where they further learned about the outcome and importance of coral restoration through writing learning notes at different stations and close observation of different types of live corals. At the end of the tour, everyone was urged to freely explore the many exhibition areas in the iOCEAN museum. The combination of virtual and physical displays allowed everyone to revisit what was learned that day. As the day’s tour came to an end, everyone took a group photo before heading back home and looked forward to the next study tour.
