For the study tour of July 23, 2023, Ms. Lu Ming-yun led 36 ARF interns and their parents on a trip to explore music and cycling culture in Taichung. The tour began with a visit to Chang Lien-cheng Saxophone Museum in the morning. As Taiwan's first saxophone maker, Mr. Chang Lien-cheng has promoted and improved on saxophone-making techniques, making Houli a well-known production site for saxophones in the 1980s. After viewing a video and listening to the on-site instructor, everyone learned that making a superb saxophone requires sophisticated craftsmanship. Even an experienced master will need a month to make one. The interns explored saxophone tone variations by experimenting with different materials and lengths, even trying their hand at metalworking and playing an alto saxophone, suitable for beginners. Trying the saxophone looked easy for experienced players, but it was a different story for the interns. Despite the challenge of carrying a saxophone with all the weight of its body, pads, keys, and rods and producing steady notes, some managed to learn a classical piece in 10 minutes. The session concluded with a quiz on jazz pieces, leaving a lasting impression of the saxophone's music.

The afternoon's itinerary was a visit to Cycling Culture Museum in Xitun. The chronologically arranged museum tour began with the bicycle's inception. Interns traced the evolution of bicycles, spotting the pedal-less "Laufmaschine" from 1817 that required foot propulsion. In the interactive Q&A that followed, interns enthusiastically voiced their observations of characteristics of the bicycles from different eras. The prototype for today's bicycle, with two identically sized wheels, chain drive, brake and rubber tires, only began to appear at the end of the 19th century. Today, bicycles are further improved by technology and built for environmental sustainability. Besides the development of bicycles in Europe, the museum also screens a documentary film on bicycles in Taiwan, triggering fond memories of childhood for many interns' parents. After exploring the two-century history of bicycles in the long gallery, everyone moved to the bicycle science exhibition area. Through detailed explanation by the tour guide, interns personally experienced the gyroscopic effect that keeps bicycles balanced, found out which types of bicycle frame are better for minimizing wind resistance, learned about "TRIPLE BUTTED" which has been developed to lighten bicycle weight, and understood how the physical properties of carbon fiber composites are changed. During the self-guided tour that followed, everyone visited exhibition areas featuring their preferred cycling themes, including virtual road-bike race, mountain bike riding simulation, getting body measurements to find suitable bike parts, and bike-friendly urban environment, all of which further the interns' understanding of cycling culture and stirred up their interest in cycling. As the day's tour came to an end, everyone took a group photo before heading back home and looked forward to the next study tour.
